Chilli chicken is a popular Indo-Chinese dish that is usually served as a starter or appetizer in most Indian restaurants. The dish is a combination of tender pieces of chicken that are marinated and then stir-fried with green and red bell peppers, onions, and a spicy soy sauce. Today, I’m going to share with you an easy and delicious chilli chicken recipe that can be made at home.
Ingredients
For the chicken:
1 pound boneless chicken cut into small pieces
1/4 cup all-purpose flour1/4 cup cornflour
2 tablespoons rice flour
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
1 egg
Oil for frying
For the sauce:
2 tablespoons oil
1 onion chopped
1 tablespoon ginger paste
1 tablespoon garlic paste
2 green chilies sliced
1/4 cup chopped spring onions
1/4 cup chopped red and green bell peppers
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon red chili sauce
1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
Salt and pepper to taste
Water as needed
Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornflour, rice flour, salt, pepper, cumin powder, coriander powder, ginger paste, garlic paste, and egg. Add enough water to make a thick batter.
2. Dip the chicken pieces into the batter and coat well.
3. In a wok or deep pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a paper towel.
4. In the same wok, heat the 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until they become translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
5. Add the ginger paste, garlic paste, and green chilies. Stir for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
6. Add the chopped spring onions and bell peppers. Stir fry for a few minutes until they are slightly softened.
7. Add the soy sauce, red chili sauce, tomato ketchup, salt, pepper, and a little water. Mix everything together and cook until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
8. Add the fried chicken pieces to the wok and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is well incorporated.
9. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
Serve the delicious chilli chicken as an appetizer or as a main dish with steamed rice. Enjoy!
